Established in 1902

In January of 1902 The Yankanuck Club of Pittsburgh (the combination of Yankee and Canuck) was organized by 20 charter members. The group, who were alumni from Lafayette College, sought the 7.5 acre island for the privacy and better fishing compared to nearby Ahmic Lake where they had been gathering before the turn of the 20th century.

Through the years

In the early 1900's, families arrived by steamship with supplies and food, from Penetanguishene. A cow and pig were purchased and brought along with the families. The cow was purchased to provide children's milk; and the pig, to rid the island of snakes. Eventually the name was shortened to just the Yankanuck Club to represent the diverse member base outside of Pittsburgh.

Queen of all the islands

Today 81 members continue the legacy of fishing, community, and revelry set in natural Georgian Bay, envisioned over 120 years ago. Members and guests partake in a summer-long fishing competition, are reminded of meals by the ringing of a dinner bell, and gaze west from the front porch to watch the sun set.
